Recognizing United Airlines
United Airlines is easily identified by its logo made of overlapping letter U’s that look like colored stripes. Most people refer to this as the ‘tulip’ logo.
It used to go by the slogan of “The Main Line Airway,” but from the years 1965 to 1996, United Airlines was known with the “Fly the Friendly Skies” tagline.
The United Airlines Experience
United Airlines is very much a recognized airline in the United States, and even throughout the globe. It is considered as one of the largest international carriers now.
At present, the airline carries on at least 3,400 flights in a day. It covers more than 200 destinations, both domestic and international. It has global air rights in Europe, Latin America and Asian regions.
In terms of the number of passengers carried, it ranks as the third largest in the world. The same also goes in terms of revenues. There are at least 60,000 people employed by United.
There are more or less 500 aircrafts under the name of United Airlines.
The airline has its focal points in 5 areas of the United States, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, Denver and Chicago. It has its headquarters in Illinois, at Elk Grove Village, not far from its largest focal point in Chicago.
The United Airlines Terminal
The United Airlines has its own terminal in O’Hare International Airport in Chicago. This was unveiled in 1987. A German-American, Helmut Jahn, architect designed the terminal. It provides a stimulating visual surrounding for the passengers as flashing lights and colored glasses pave the way.
How It All Started
It will definitely be interesting to know the history of one of the largest airlines.
United Airlines or UAL is known as the oldest commercial airline in US. It traces this fact to the air mail service of Walter Varney. It was April 6, 1926 when the chief pilot of Varney flew from the Idaho headquarters in a Swallow biplane carrying the first Contract Air Mail to Washington.
Another airplane pioneer, William Boeing bought other airmail carriers, including the one by Varney. Boeing operated in that year 1927 under Boeing Air Transport. 2 years after, the name was changed into United Aircraft – Transport Corporation.
The year 1930, aircrafts went beyond carrying mails. Airplanes began to carry passengers. The aircraft then hired a nurse, Ellen Church, to provide assistance to passengers. Ms. Church has been regarded as the first stewardess of the airline.
In 1934, the Air Mail Act of 1934 banned common ownership of airlines. Thus, the company of Boeing had to be broken down into the following: a parts supplier, an aircraft maker and an airline group. The airline group is the United Air Lines we know now. It was then headed by Mr. William Patterson.
United Airlines expanded from then on. It made interconnections between San Francisco and Denver for its route system. It also participated in the war effort during the World War II. After the war, the airline enjoyed the boost of demand by customers for flying, considering the new plane technologies discovered.
In 1961, United Airlines merged with Capital Airlines. It then became the largest commercial airline in the world. By then, United was able to cover the whole of United States. Later in 1983, it was able to cover transpacific routes. It then had its first flight to Tokyo.
Back in its early days up to present time, United Airlines displayed its willingness and commitment to providing the best services to the passengers and most amenable contributions to the airline industry. Next time you travel, take the United Airlines. You definitely do not want to miss the experience of flying with the best airline in town, rather the best airline in the world.
