An Overview of America West Airlines
America West Airlines used to be one of the top ten airlines of the United States. It was the first airline to utilize employees who did multitasking and who can handle and are trained on various airline functions. It is also among the first airline companies to offer its employees a chance to own company stocks by requiring employees to allot twenty percent of their earnings for the purchase of company stocks. This policy is rooted in the airline's corporate principle that its employees are a big factor towards the success of the airline particularly in achieving good customer service.
America West Airline's growth in 1985 was considered tremendous considering that it only had 280 employees and three planes when it started flying two years ago. It was so remarkable that the airport management had to construct and install six additional gates just for America West Airlines. This growth continued with the airline's fleet expanding through the purchase of Boeing 757s and the use of red eyes or flights operated between the hours of one to four in the morning to maximize the use of its fleet acquisitions.
However, the airline's growth was also responsible for its bankruptcy in 1994, forcing the management of American West Airline to reorganize and become partly owned by Continental and Mesa Airlines.
Six years after its bankruptcy and reorganization, America West Airline got a $380 million loan courtesy of the Air Transportation Stabilization Board, which was paid in 2005 through the funds coming from other loan sources. The said loan is seen to be the response of the administration of President George W. Bush's to pressing problems of the aviation industry.
Changes after America West Airline's reorganization
America West Airline is now known as US Airways, and now a member of the US Airways Group. The Group was formed as a result of a merger between US Airways Group and America West Holdings Corporation last September 2005. The US Airways now flies to an estimated 100 destinations in Mexico, the United States and Canada. The merger of America West and US Airways resulted to a company that now employs a total of 38,000 professionals in the aviation industry.
Due to the merger, all the airlines under the group will carry the brand of US Airways starting the Year 2007 when the airlines have been fully combined. However, the flights of America West Airline have been carrying the brand of US Airways as early as January 2006.
Among the changes after the reorganization includes the gradual phase out of its Boeing 737-200 planes and its replacement by the Airbus A320 planes; the adoption of a new logo and color scheme. Also in the offing is the issuance of electronic tickets which is considered more efficient and cost effective.
Starting the year 2006, America West Airline's FlightFund, a marketing strategy that offers freebies to frequent fliers, will be placed under the Dividend Miles, a program of the US Airways.
The airline has its own share of accidents involving emergency landing or turbulence, but nothing fatal.
Community Relations
As part of its community relations, America West Airlines has devised a way wherein passengers can donate their flying miles to any of four non profit organizations. Among these are the Make a Wish Foundation, American Red Cross, Angel Flight Foundation and the Fisher House Foundation. The program is under the Miles of Hope project of America West Airlines, which has already donated fifty-five thousand miles to the said organizations.
